Women's Day

Yesterday was Women’s Day where in Italy it is celebrated by giving out these small yellow flowers to all the women and giving them discounts on the occasional thing.

Mirella invited me to go to one of her friends wedding so I got to see an Italian wedding! They had it in a room in Palazzo Vecchio that is usually booked very tightly and often will have a new wedding every 30 minutes. The room was the Red Room and was beautifully decorated. Over all it was a very lovely ceremony. Outside, we threw rice on the bride for good luck and wished her well.

The bride is in the long red coat :)

We then went to have lunch at a small place with gelato at Grom after! They then showed me a monument for a bombing that happened in 1993 that was a very nice tribute.

The last stop of the day was at the pig by the leather market. Tradition holds that you rub a coin on its snout then stick it in its mouth and let the coin fall. If it goes into the grate below it’s good luck and you’ll be coming back to Florence. I wasn’t told what happens if it doesn’t go in the grate…. Luckily mine did! All of the fountains that I’ve seen in Italy where you throw in coins then have a collection every few days and donate the money to a charity.
