A Long Roman Post

This weekend we went to Rome, leaving Friday morning and coming back Sunday night. When we first arrived we were given a bus tour through the city, showing all the major spots and giving some interesting facts about the walls and different landmarks.

The "wedding cake" memorial

After the bus tour we had a walking tour past the Colosseum, the Pantheon, and the Trevi Fountain.

Throwing a coin in the Trevi Fountain! Now I have to go back!

That night we went to dinner than bed.

They had free wifi....

The next day we had a tour of the Vatican. We saw briefly the museum and then went through to the Sistine Chapel. The tour guide was not allowed in so that is where the tour stopped. The Chapel was gorgeous and I could have stared at it for much longer than we stayed. Next we went to St. Peters Basilica which was so beautiful it was hard to comprehend how much work and money went into building it.

Gorgeous detailing in the Vatican

Our tour guide for the Vatican. Since she couldn't go into the Sistine Chapel she showed us the key things on this screen so that we could see them when we went in.

For the rest of the day we took our own walking tour, with constant references to the map so we didn't get too lost. It was good that I was with people because I was still confused on directions from the bus tour. Since you have to take a lot of twists and turns when driving I couldn't tell the relation of the landmarks to each other.

The Spanish Steps

This picture is called "How many cats can you spot?"
It turns out that underneath were I was standing is a cat rescue and adoption facility so there were a ton of cats hanging out amongst the ruins.

I loved how in Rome the ancient is so entwined with the modern. Every few steps you saw a new dig or ruins.

On Sunday morning we got up early and went to see the Colosseum. We wanted to actually go inside it and it was honestly really interesting. I wish I could have spent more time there but I'm glad I got to see it.

The last thing we did in Rome was get blessed by the Pope! He's the tiny white dot in the top right open window. Apparently he accidentally swore during his blessing... and we were there to hear it! Though since it was all in Italian none of us caught it.
